York, Pa. teen named Distinguished Young Woman of Pennsylvania

Statewide scholarship program awarded $9,000 in cash scholarships to participants

Mobile, Ala. (August 1, 2011) - On July 30, Carolyne Henry of York, Pa. was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Pennsylvania and awarded $5,800 in cash scholarships during a statewide scholarship program for high school girls held at the Richland Performing Arts Center in Johnstown, Pa.

Henry was one of 14 high school senior girls from Pennsylvania who competed to represent the state as the Distinguished Young Woman of Pennsylvania for 2012. Other award recipients included: Meredith Heckman of Nazareth (1st Runner-up, Fitness Award, Interview Award, Scholastic Award, Self-Expression Award); Emily Donato of Butler (2nd Runner-up, Be Your Best Self Award, Scholastic Award); and Kathryn Markovits of Mount Joy (3rd Runner-up). Participants were evaluated in the categories of Scholastics (20%), Interview (25%), Fitness (15%), Self-Expression (15%) and Talent (25%).

"Carly is an excellent representative of an outstanding group of 14 finalists that participated in the Distinguished Young Women of Pennsylvania Finals,” said Fred Smith, program chairperson.

Throughout the next year, Henry will represent Pennsylvania at various public events and serve as a role model to young people by spreading the program’s national outreach message of “Be Your Best Self.”

Henry is the daughter of Stephen and Lora Henry and will be a senior at Dallastown Area High School this fall. Henry’s achievements include: Student Council President; 4H Secretary; Top 3% of Class; Distinguished Honor Role; Principle Second Violinist in Dallastown Orchestra; Dallastown Science Fair: reserve grand champion; York County Science Fair: first place; PA State 4H Horse Show qualifier; Rotary Club Student of the Month. In addition, Henry’s activities include: Student Council; School Board Student Representative; National Honor Society; Teaching Violin; 4H; Orchestra; Ensemble; Pit Orchestra.

The 55th National Finals will take place on June 28, 29, and 30, 2012, in Mobile, Alabama. Henry will travel to Mobile, Alabama along with 49 other state representatives to participate in personal development activities and community service projects before competing for the opportunity to become the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2012 and for a share of more than $140,000 in cash scholarships. Tennessee’s Katye Brock, who will attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville this fall, won the 2011 overall award.
