AJM 2007, NORA ALI, TO PARTICIPATE IN MOBILE VETERANS’ DAY EVENTS
Nora Ali, AJM 2007, will travel to Mobile this weekend to participate in events hosted by Mobile’s Veterans Day Commission. Nora will arrive on Sunday, November 11th, and stay through Tuesday to take part in the following community events:
At 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Nora will be a guest in the Veterans’ Day Parade through downtown Mobile. Following the parade, she will attend the Veterans’ Day Honors Luncheon at Fort Whiting Armory. She will then speak to hundreds of fourth graders from the community about AJM’s national outreach program, Be Your Best Self, in the Young Americans for Freedom Celebration at the Battleship at 3:00 p.m. Monday evening, Nora will perform God Bless America on her violin during the Mobile Symphonic Pops Orchestra Concert at the Battleship.
Even though Nora’s parents are not originally from the United States, Veteran’s Day is still a holiday that Nora and her family celebrate. “The reason that my parents came to the U.S. was to improve their lives and to provide their children with the greatest opportunities possible,” she explains. “I am grateful that I can honor those who helped to shape our country."
Nora was selected as the 50th AJM at the 2007 AJM National Finals in June where she won more than $50,000 in cash scholarships. She is currently a student at Harvard University.
Founded in 1957, AJM is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school senior girls. The nonprofit program’s goal is to honor young women who excel and encourage them to obtain a college education and assume roles of leadership in their communities and professions. During the past 50 years, AJM has awarded cash scholarships totaling more than $90 million to girls across the nation. More than 700,000 young college-bound young women have competed in the program.
AJM’s national sponsors are the City of Mobile, Mobile County, and the Mitchell Company. Category sponsors are Alabama Power, Encore Rehabilitation, Mobile Gas, Regions Bank, and Wintzell’s Oyster House.
The 51st Annual AJM National Finals will take place in Mobile June 26-28, 2008.
